Background

Welcome to GovNet’s 5th annual government IT 09 – Evolution Through Transformation the UK’s premier event for those involved in public sector ICT.

government IT 09 has been intensely researched to bring you all the hot topics taking place within public sector IT that will impact on the strategic future of government. This year's conference programme has been designed with a host of public sector stakeholders. In addition, our continued collaboration with media partner, Computer Weekly has strengthened our news-based content. We are also delighted to announce that this year’s Chair is Tony Collins, Executive Editor of Computer Weekly.

Now firmly established in the ICT calendar, over 400 key delegates from across the UK will be present at the high-profile and prestigious conference, joining 20 speakers and over 25 exhibitors to discuss the latest topics affecting public sector ICT, they will share best practice and discover important new tools and methods of working.

A primary focus will be Transformational Government Strategy, which was launched just two years ago but has already seen significant progress made, as government seeks to revitalise public services. Indeed, 16 July 2008 saw the publication of the latest Transformational Government Annual Report, which documented improvements that have been made in the following areas:

Website rationalisation: Another 712 government websites have been earmarked for closure – bringing the total to more than 900 since 2006 and making it easier for people to find the information they want and need online, without unnecessarily trawling the web.

Shared services: More than half of all government employees are now customers of shared corporate services – saving money and freeing up staff to concentrate on delivering world-class public services.

Customer satisfaction: The new Customer Service Excellence standard to embed best practice across the public sector and create new guidelines measuring customer satisfaction has been published, aiming to ensure that taxpayers get the level of service they require.

governmentIT 09 will zero in on the Transformational Government agenda – how much further must departments go to ensure that Varney’s ambitious recommendations become reality?

Another key area for discussion will be the progress made by DWP on the use of innovative technology to improve public services. Dean James, Chief Operating Officer, Department of Work & Pensions will be outlining his department’s achievements in the efficient use of ICT and their future plans in the areas of identity management ,the electronic transfer of information, and online information access.

Earlier this year on 22 February 2008, Baroness Shriti Vadera, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at BERR, announced a review of broadband, a technology that enables both businesses and the public to access a wide variety of new ICT services and remain competitive in tough global conditions. The government recognises the potential for digital technologies to transform the way we live and work, and at governmentIT 09 we will be exploring next-generation access and the importance of an advanced telecommunications infrastructure, along with the findings of this pivotal review.

Also featured on the main plenary stage at this year’s event will be Dave Williams, Head of Technology and Innovation at the Environment Agency. Dave will be discussing how the Environment Agency are taking the lead on the use of Green IT across government, and how they are encouraging an attitude change in the design of sustainable IT contracts in government.

governmentIT 09 will act as a centre for discussion and networking, featuring key presentations directly relevant to the Transformational Government programme and the broader public sector ICT agenda, examining the best ways to improve public services delivery for the benefit of citizens, businesses, taxpayers and frontline staff. The whole day will be punctuated with a series of thought provoking seminars and best of breed solutions and services on display in the networking exhibition area. We look forward to welcoming you in 2009.
